What Are Air Duct Cleaning Engineering Controls?

Engineering controls are techniques used to ensure the safety of the health of the building’s occupants and air filters cleaning that there is no cross-contamination in HVAC system maintenance and cleaning processes. These methods include:

  • Control of the source and zone off
  • Isolation barriers/Containment
  • Pressure differential
  • Dust suppression
  • HEPA vacuuming and filters
  • Complete cleaning
  • Control of humidity and temperature


These controls in engineering affect the many aspects of air cleaning of ducts. You may not be thinking of. These comprise:


  • Maintenance of equipment All equipment must be in good condition and in good working in good working.
  • Before starting the project Clean and inspect the equipment to ensure that no contaminants are introduced.
  • During the course of the project Maintain/service the equipment in order to prevent the risk of cross-contamination.
  • Maintenance of filters throughout the construction: If the vacuum collection equipment on-site needs to be opened for service or change of filters, it should be done in a contained space or outside the building.

  • Vacuum exhausting equipment for indoor use should use HEPA filtering with 99.97 percent efficiency of collection to 0.3 micron particles.
  • Negative pressure conditions Continuous negative pressure must be maintained within the area that is that is being cleaned, in relation to the space that surrounds it.
  • Handling of materials that are contaminated All materials that are contaminated should be appropriately contained before being removed from the construction.
  • Air cleaning in the ambient It is recommended that the cleaning of air with HEPA air scrubbers that are filtered be utilized during and following HVAC cleaning and restoration in order to ensure at least four air changes every hour.
  • Control of the emission of products Follow the manufacturer’s application guidelines, which includes exhaust ventilation for chemical cleaners and other cleaning agents.

A proper engineering control system should be employed on every HVAC restoration and cleaning project. The safety of workers, building occupants and avoiding cross contamination must be the top priority.
